A Roman philosopher from the mid-1st century AD once said, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” Indeed, time flies so fast that we did not even notice that school year 2008-2009 has already reached its end.
Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) is again crowded with returning and new students. Fresh from their vacations, they meet their old barkadas and start sharing the adventures they had during the summer. Some stay in a corner adapting to the new environment while others strive to make friends. Laughter and chatters are heard from all the corners of the university. All of these are implications that indeed, another school year has begun.
But before we fully embrace another set of adventures from this new beginning, let’s rewind to the things that transpired and the issues that we encountered – those things and issues that indicated a healthy history. These are the hardships that we have surpassed, and the memorable events that made our stay last year even more memorable.
The dress code policy. Who would forget the days when most Norsunians have to go back home to change their clothes and foot wear? This was when they were barred from entering NORSU for not adhering to the dress code implemented by the Office of the Security Matters. It was vague and inconsistent at first but at the end, everything went well. Kudos to the guards who were successful in implementing the policy, now Norsunians are more responsible and of course, decent!
Unfortunate event. Together, we all mourned when a senior student of the College of Maritime Education of NORSU was confirmed one of the unfortunate missing passengers when Sulpicio Lines’ MV Princess of the Stars sank off the coast of Sibuyan Island in Romblon. The pain was there and it will always be there. However, we have witnessed during the unwanted incident that the sympathy and concern of the NORSU family was never absent.
‘Failed’ trips. A number of ‘failed trips’ were also reported last school year. There where a lot of unsatisfied students, much money and time wasted. These things are really hard to bear. The damage has been done. Our only hope is that it won’t happen again this year.
NORSU tops, as always! This university produces more and more topnotchers every year, and last school year was not an exception to this. We were not surprised when Engr. Bernard Z. Duran Jr. ranked 5th in the Civil Engineering Licensure Examination; nor were we doubtful when Engr. Winston B. Gomez and Engr. Jephunneh A. Paalisbo placed 2nd and 7th, respectively, in the nationwide October 2008 Mechanical Engineering (ME) Licensure Examination; and especially so, when Catherine G. Capilla, a graduate of Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) major in Special Education, scored 89 percent in the nationwide licensure examination, placing her on the top ten among the 17, 816 BEEd LET passers. Truly, the quality education that NORSU offers is beyond compare!
Adoption of E grade system. One of the many achievements that we had last year is when NORSU adopted the electronic grade system (e-System) programs through Local Area Network. This surely is a great help to the grading and enrollment process of our university.
Imported mentors. Several mentors from all over the world were hired to impart their knowledge to Norsunians. Thus, making students globally competitive!
Improvements in facilities and infrastructures. More equipment and facilities were also acquired by Norsunians last year. NORSU provided Engine Room Facilities and Mock Bridge for CME students and a mini-hospital for CNAHS students. The university gate was also restructured and the construction of the first phase of the CNAHS building was started. Blue guards were also installed in the campus for tighter security.
The past school year definitely left a mark in all our hearts and it has become a part of what NORSU is now. As we continue to discover new adventures this school year 2009-2010, let us remember to make the most out of it. Together, let us create lasting memories – a healthy history. Let us learn from our mistakes and continue making this year an unforgettable one – because soon, this will also be another beginning’s end.
