Safety First: Tips to avoid being robbed

By Maria Margarita T. Narvasa

Thievery is rampant inside and outside the university. Despite the stringent measures of the Office of the Security Matters to protect the students, still a lot of Norsunians fall prey to thieves. If you are among the victims, then you now belong to the millions of people everywhere in the world who are victimized by these thieves. If you haven’t been victimized yet, CONGRATULATIONS!

However, just because you haven’t been victimized yet does not mean you will be letting your guard down. You have to be constantly vigilant of your safety because thieves can strike anytime, anywhere.

Here are some tips that could help you to avoid falling in the hands of thieves:

Keep your bags close to you, and closed.

To avoid being robbed, it is a wise decision to keep your things close to you. When you decide to go to the library, comfort room, or even when you just want to sit down and relax at the lounges while waiting for your next class, make sure that all your things are beside you. Otherwise, ask someone reliable to watch your things for you.

Also, make sure that your bags or purses are closed. It is easier for robbers to steal from you if your bags are wide open. To be surer, use purses with zippers so that you can safely keep your belongings inside.

Do not invite thieves to steal your valuables from you.

If you have the newest model of cellphone, laptop or other expensive things, never flaunt them! Expensive gadgets always get the attention of thieves; thus, it would be a good idea to keep it in your bag to be safe and sound.

Moreover, never glue your cell phones to your ear. If you really need to have that important call, make sure you are in a safe place. Avoid texting or calling in public places, especially if they are too crowded. It would be easier for the thieves to grab your phones from your hands if you are in a crowded place.

Also, use your laptops only when it is really needed and stay indoors like in the library. Do not leave it anywhere even when you are alone in a place– laptops are so popular these days, thus, they are like diamonds in the robbers’ eyes.

Avoid carrying a lot of cash with you.

What will they steal if your money is just enough for a pedicab ride? Robbers target those who bring a lot of money with them. So if you don’t want to lose your whole allowance for this month, don’t bring them all with you. Fifty pesos would be enough for pedicab rides and snacks. Don’t keep the whole one thousand pesos in your wallet.

Moreover, if you have 500 or 1000 peso bills, take time to have them changed to 50-peso or better yet, 20-peso bills. So if you buy snacks in the coop or cafeteria, you do not have to flaunt your bills. Not only will it save time for the vendors to give you your change, it will also save you from being the next target of thieves.

Never be distracted.

When someone asks for the time or asks for a change of his bills, hold tight on your belongings before responding. Distraction is one of the most popular techniques of robbers. They start talking to you then in a minute, your stuffs are gone. So be careful when talking to strangers. Better yet, remember what your mom used to tell you, “never talk to strangers”.

Be watchful.

When someone looks suspicious, get out of that place immediately. The best defense against being robbed is to be aware of your surroundings. So try to look at the people around you. Does someone look suspicious? Is someone always glancing at your valuables, or is someone frequently going near you or your things? If there is, then leave the place immediately.

Make it a habit not to be lax. It is better to take effort to transfer to other place than to regret being robbed after. Remember, not all robbers have masks on them.

Regret comes last. So before you’ll be the next crying victim, take the precautionary measures. It may not assure you of 100 percent safety but at least you tried to drive the bad guys away. Be extra careful, the culprit might just be the person next to you!
