You can make a difference!
The youth nowadays faces one of the biggest challenges of their lives. Like what our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, said, “The youth is the hope of our fatherland,” the future now lies on the youths’ hands – our very hands. We can affect our society. We can make a new beginning.
Since we are the hope, then, today is the right time to act. Doing nothing for our nation is like committing a crime, and so together, let us take that big step to change. In this issue, The NORSUnian is encouraging every Norsunian to be active in the following issues that concern this country.
A single vote counts.
Have you noticed that the election circus is coming to town? When you watch TV, do you see ads from the faces that have already proclaimed their will to be candidates? If yes, then you will surely agree that as early as now, the campaign for the 2010 national and local elections is kicking off – though not yet officially. If the possible candidates are all ready for their strategies to persuade us, then we should also be geared up with information as to whom we should believe.
A number of first time voters, which includes the youth, make up most of the voters populace next election. Hence, the first thing that we should do by now is to be registered voters so that we can exercise our rights of suffrage. After registering, we can now start assessing who will be our choice. And though each one of us has our own bets already, it isn’t too late to change our minds.
Voting, especially for the presidential position, is no joke. Thus, make sure to do some research or dig into what the presidentiables have already done for our country and their capability to run for the position they are eyeing on.
This coming election let us not waste our privilege to vote. A single vote can really make a difference.
“Save Mother Earth.”
Observe the environment. Is it still the same greenish, abundant nature we had before? Truly, we can notice the big difference. Rivers and lakes are drying, if not, polluted and filled with garbage. Some marine and land animals are now declared endangered. Forests are denuded. Lately, we notice that the weather is inconsistent due to climate change.
In Dumaguete City, there had been various fora, seminars and gatherings that focused on environmental issues, specifically on climate change. To recall, during the opening of school year 2009-2010, vice-mayors in the whole Visayas gathered for a 3-day forum to talk about the cause, effects and solutions of climate change. The Vice-Governor’s office also prepared a climate change adaptation presentation for another forum.
The effects of climate change to our environment today are getting worst. As ordinary citizens, we can make lifestyle choices that could reduce our contribution to the degradation of Mother Earth.
Let’s start caring for our environment! Let us act now because, after all, we live here.
They may not be like you, but they are still human beings.
Is gender equality practiced up to now? Do gays and lesbians get the same treatment as the straight ones do? Does the third gender deserve criticisms?
Equality takes place this time. It’s a matter of respect too, because if we want to be respected, we need to respect others also regardless of his/her gender. So, what is your stand on the issue of discrimination of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals (LGBT) in the country?
Gender issues are one of the most discussed topics in the society today. As we know, there are already a lot of famous and successful professionals who belong to the third gender. This just proves that whether you’re a woman trapped in a man’s body, or vice versa, you still hold the right to be respected and praised.
Aside from gays and lesbians, women also experienced brutalities from their partners. According to http://www.globalissues.org, violence against women is a greater cause of death and disability among women aged 15 to 44 than cancer, malaria or road traffic.
Do something about this issue now so that others will follow.
So, are you ready to step up and say, “Yes, I can be an agent of change!”? As concerned citizens, don’t stay in a corner doing nothing. Let us make something to make a difference for this nation. Always remember that even an ordinary YOUth can be an agent of change!
Here are two of the programs that The NORSUnian recommends for the youth to actively take part in:
“It’s time to stop complaining, and time to start doing. It’s time to stop blaming everyone else, and time to accept responsibility for building our future. It’s time to stop accepting the world as it is – corrupt, inefficient, unfair and unjust – and start visualizing the world as it can – and should – be.”
These inspiring words, taken from an article published at www.abs-cbnnews.com, are said by the Head of ABS-CBN News & Current Affairs Maria A. Ressa, which encourage us to make a move.
ABS-CBN, one of the giant television networks in the country, launched “Boto Mo, I-patrol Mo”, a program that encourages Filipinos around the globe to be responsible voters and report anomalies involving politicians through the use of modern technology devices.
Boto Mo, I-Patrol Mo gives people the power to report unjust happenings during the campaign period. When a politician buys a vote, or uses a government property to campaign, and the like, then one should only take a picture and send it to ABS-CBN.
Through text messages and e-mail, we can report what we have witnessed during elections in our place to make sure that a clean election will take place.
